If you've just moved into a home with an old boiler, or yours has finally packed in, you want a straight answer on price before you call anyone out. Here's what a new boiler actually costs in the UK in 2026, what changes the price, and what to watch for on quotes.
BandBack Move builds you a free week-by-week checklist tailored to your move — so the boiler, and everything else, gets sorted at the right time.
Build My Free Plan →Most homeowners pay somewhere between £1,500 and £5,500 for a new boiler, fully supplied and fitted. Where you land in that range depends on the type of boiler, whether it's a straight swap or something more involved, and where you live.
| Boiler type | Typical cost (supplied & fitted) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Combi boiler, like-for-like swap | £1,500 – £4,000 | Cheapest and quickest option for most homes |
| System boiler | £2,000 – £4,500 | Common in homes with a hot water cylinder |
| Regular (conventional) boiler | £2,500 – £5,500 | Older-style setup, more parts involved |
| Converting to a different boiler type | £3,500 – £6,000+ | New pipework and flue routing add cost |
| Moving the boiler to a new location | Add £800 – £1,500+ | On top of the boiler and standard install cost |
These are UK-wide ranges. If you're in London or the South East, expect to be nearer the top of each range — installers there typically charge £250–£700 more than the UK average for the same job.
A few things move the number more than people expect.
Access. A boiler tucked in a loft or a tight airing cupboard takes longer to remove and fit than one in an open kitchen cupboard. That's extra labour time, and it's billed as such.
Pipework and flue changes. A straight like-for-like swap is the cheapest job an installer does. The moment you need new flue routing, extra pipework, or you're switching boiler type (say, regular to combi), you're paying for materials and a longer job — sometimes a full extra day.
Brand. Premium manufacturers cost more than mid-range ones for the same output. That's not necessarily bad value — some come with 10–12 year warranties instead of 2–5 years — but it's worth knowing that's what you're paying for.
Boiler size. Bigger homes with more bathrooms need a higher-output boiler, which costs more upfront.
A standard combi-to-combi swap usually takes 4 to 6 hours — often done in a single day. Anything involving a boiler type change, relocation, or difficult access can stretch to 1–3 days.
This trips a lot of people up: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers a government grant, does not apply to standard gas boiler replacements. It's specifically for low-carbon heating — currently worth up to £7,500 towards a heat pump or £5,000 towards a biomass boiler. If you're replacing a gas boiler like-for-like, there's no equivalent grant. Anyone advertising "grants" for a standard gas boiler swap is worth double-checking before you sign anything.
Not every boiler problem means a full replacement. As a rough guide, if your boiler is under 10 years old, a repair is usually the cheaper route — most call-outs and parts cost a fraction of a new install. Once a boiler passes 12–15 years, is breaking down more than once a year, or a repair quote comes in above roughly a third of the cost of a new one, replacement usually makes more financial sense. An engineer can confirm which side of that line you're on.
Only getting one quote. Prices for the same job can vary by hundreds of pounds between installers. Get at least three — you can compare quotes from vetted local boiler engineers to make that easier.
Not checking Gas Safe registration. Any engineer working on a gas boiler in the UK must be Gas Safe registered by law. Ask for the registration number and check it if you're not using someone recommended.
Forgetting the warranty terms. A longer manufacturer warranty (10+ years) usually needs the boiler to be installed and registered by an accredited installer — an unregistered "cheap" install can quietly void it.
Assuming the cheapest quote is like-for-like. Some low quotes exclude things like a new flue, a filter, or removal of the old boiler. Ask exactly what's included before comparing prices side by side.
Budget £1,500–£4,000 for a straightforward combi swap, and more — up to £5,500 or beyond — if you're changing boiler type, moving its location, or dealing with awkward access. Get several quotes, check Gas Safe registration, and don't expect a government grant unless you're switching to a heat pump or biomass system.
